Bayer Sheet Europe Sets Economic and Ecologic Standards with Makrolon® Multi-wall Sheets

Darmstadt, June 29, 2006. With its innovative, intelligent products from the successful i-LINE, Bayer Sheet Europe sets new standards for energy-saving transparent and translucent construction materials. Makrolon® multi-wall sheets meet the highest standards in construction both in terms of ecologic compatibility and economic efficiency. The sheets are cost-effective and ideal for roofs, façades, and window rows. Due to the material’s excellent heat insulation properties, buildings can be turned into energy-storage and energy-saving “energy stations.”

For several years, cost-conscious energy management and environmentally friendly construction have been the standards of Bayer Sheet Europe’s strategic product development. Under the i-LINE quality mark, the company offers a wide range of Makrolon® multi-wall sheets that provide intelligent and energy-saving solutions for industrial and private buildings. “Due to the increasing cost of power and costs for oil and gas heating, and more stringent regulations in European countries, there is an increasing demand for construction materials with high heat-insulating properties,” says Günther Winnerl, construction segment manager at Bayer Sheet Europe. The efforts of many countries to substantially reduce CO2 emissions by granting financial subsidies for building renovations have also had a positive impact on environmental awareness. There is a growing readiness to invest in energy-saving measures, and owners, planners, and architects attribute increasing importance to energy-saving and ecologically compatible construction materials. “With our i-LINE products,” says Winnerl, “we are well prepared—we have the right sheet for every construction project.”

The new range of Makrolon sheets helps to cut heating costs and save energy.

Compared to standard sheets of the same 16mm thickness, the Makrolon® multi UV 6-wall sheet (type 6/16-20) saves up to 25 percent energy. Projected for a full year, this adds up to a significant energy saving: 5 liters of heating oil, or 5.5 cubic meters of natural gas, for each square meter of building.

The sheet is also available in 20 millimeters thickness and in widths of 980, 1200, and 2100 millimeters in colorless, opal, and IQ-Relax. Another advantage of the multi-wall sheet is a special coating that is permanently bonded to the sheet through co-extrusion, making the material weather-resistant and providing long-term protection against yellowing. As the 6-wall sheets have a very low weight (2.8, respectively 3.1 kilograms per square meter), they are especially suitable for filigree substructures. With more than 1 million square meters sold since Bayer Sheet Europe launched the product in 2003, the polycarbonate sheet has become a sales hit for façades, roofs, and tunnel vaults. One of the many high-profile projects includes the roof of the new Airbus 380 display hangar at Airbus Deutschland GmbH in Hamburg-Finkenwerder, Germany, where Makrolon® 6-wall was used.

Whether customers choose the 6-wall sheet, the multi UV-4/10-6 with Y-structure, or sheets with X-structure (5X/32-25, 5X/25-25), which were introduced in 2005—all Makrolon® types from the i-LINE portfolio fulfill the highest requirements in terms of stability and heat insulation, allowing to build in a cost-efficient and energy-saving way. Their excellent cold-bending properties make the 6-wall and 4-wall sheets particularly advantageous for window rows. The X-structures offer high rigidity and load distribution in sunrooms and enclosed porches of residential buildings.

The Makrolon® multi UV 6-wall sheets and 4-wall sheets and the Makrolon® multi UV IQ-Relax sheet range are part of the successful i-LINE from Bayer Sheet Europe, the quality mark for a new generation of optimized products that provide innovative solutions for the highest requirements in construction.
